Dr. Kala has been inclined towards social welfare since she was young. From volunteering for eye operation camps in Gomia, Bihar, to helping NGOs in slums, she has always wanted to help the needy. On some such visits, she realised the poor state of menstrual hygiene that these women practice due to lack of awareness. After the untimely demise of her daughter Maitreyi (Mitu) she was determined to make a difference. She strongly believes in “Information is wealth” and coined her own saying “Give a woman a fish, you feed her for a day. Teach her to fish, and you have fed her and her family for life”. She started Multiple Initiatives Towards Upliftment (MITU) with the thought that women can be informed and enabled to behave differently in many aspects of their daily life.
